A Norwich film director is shining a light on a little-known piece of wartime history by exploring the inner-worlds and daily life of Land Girls during the Second World War in her latest project.
Rekha Garton, who achieved success with the short film the Herring Girls, has announced her next project, Ash Fields, which will be shot in Norfolk using an entirely local cast and crew.
The 20-minute short follows the lives of three members of the Women’s Land Army (WLA), focusing on a romantic relationship between two of the young women - Maisie and Betty - a story Rekha says “certainly happened, but has been lost in history”. The plot also weaves in a ghostly soldier and a grumpy farmer, capturing both the hardship and emotional complexity of wartime life.
