BALKAN STORIES: NOT SO POPULAR EVENT

As curator and producer, I sought with this diasporic exhibition to bring together Balkan voices, visions & sounds for an intimate night of creative storytelling through experimental poetry, fusion music & photography. This event took place a Joyeux Bordel (Shoreditch, London) in 2016 and was part of arts collective Not So Popular's fortnightly PEAKS series, a night of art, talks and music - connecting London's up and coming talent together. Presenting Olivera Inđić’s photographic series, ‘Stories from the City… Stories from the Balkans’. Indjić wonderful documentary photographs of Turkey, Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and Bosnia capture everyday moments within which exists the unexpected… Read interview discussing her work here.
The Orphea duo performed a wonderful contemporary approach to traditional singing and melodies from the Balkans. Click here to read more on their thoughts on the topics of Balkan nationalisms, heritage and the commercialisation of balkan music.
Julian Plaka’s photographic series ‘Kitsch Melancholy’ captures a journey through time and space, between generations, objects and their meanings. His images express a mixture of melancholy and anxiety that emerged from a road trip, leaving Italy to see his hometown, Tirana in Albania.
Ana Seferovic, Nik Jovčić-Sas and Sanja Bergerbaum Maričić’s collaboration birthed. a moving multi-sensory performance, where poetry and photographic projection explored growing up in Belgrade during the war, accompanied by the voice of an emotive, diasporic Kafana-style violin. ‘Daydreaming Serbia’ is a photographic collection reflecting what Milica Nikolić would like to see in her country, Serbia, not by looking through rose-tinted glasses, but through a slightly different shade. Read more about this project.
